About Las Terrenas — the DR's most European beach town
Las Terrenas is a bohemian international beach town on the north coast of the Samaná peninsula. It grew from a fishing village in the 1980s into a lively multicultural community where French, Italian, Swiss and Dominican residents live year-round. The vibe is closer to Tulum or Provence than to Punta Cana's all-inclusive strip — think beach bistros, artisan bakeries, small boutique hotels and a walkable town center.
The three main beaches — Playa Bonita, Playa Cosón and Playa Las Ballenas — are among the most beautiful in the country. Popular properties include Sublime Samaná, Bahía Las Ballenas, Grand Paradise Samaná, Alisei, Xeliter Vista Mare and dozens of upscale villas.

Distance from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) to Las Terrenas: approximately 215 km. Travel time in a private vehicle: 2 h 50 min to 3 h 15 min depending on the exact villa or hotel. The route follows the Coral Highway north, crosses the Samaná Bay bridge and then heads west along the peninsula's north coast through Sánchez.
