About Boca Chica — the classic Dominican beach town
Boca Chica sits on the southern coast just 30 km east of Santo Domingo and 10 minutes from Las Américas International Airport (SDQ). Its shallow reef-protected bay creates a natural swimming pool — one of the safest beaches in the country for young children. The town center is compact, lively and very Dominican, with dozens of family-run seafood restaurants, beach kiosks and small boutique hotels.
Guests who land at PUJ (better long-haul connections than SDQ) and stay in Boca Chica typically choose a private transfer to skip the airport transfer / taxi juggling. Popular properties include Be Live Experience Hamaca Beach, Don Juan Beach Resort, Whala!Boca Chica and dozens of private villas.
Distance and travel time: PUJ to Boca Chica
Distance from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) to Boca Chica: approximately 180 km. Travel time in a private vehicle: 2 h 15 min to 2 h 30 min depending on traffic entering the Santo Domingo metropolitan area. The route runs on the Coral Highway, then the Autovía del Este toll road and finally Avenida Las Américas.
There are two toll booths on the route (approx. RD$ 400 total, included in the flat price). Traffic can slow briefly near San Pedro de Macorís and when approaching the SDQ airport interchange — we build a small buffer into the estimated arrival time.
Why private transfer over taxi or public transport
There is no Uber service on the PUJ → Boca Chica inter-city route. Street taxis at PUJ quote $280-$360 USD in older vehicles with no child seats. Public transport (guagua + metro) is cheap but takes 5-6 hours with multiple transfers and no luggage guarantees.
