About Santo Domingo — the first city of the Americas
Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic and the oldest continuously inhabited European city in the Americas, founded in 1496. Its Zona Colonial is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that contains the first cathedral, the first hospital, the first paved street and the first fortress built in the New World. Beyond the historic center, modern Santo Domingo is a metropolitan area of 3.5 million people with the country's main business district (Piantini, Naco, Polígono Central), its main international airport (SDQ Las Américas) and the Sans Souci cruise terminal.
Many Punta Cana travelers add a Santo Domingo day or overnight to their beach trip, and many business travelers fly into PUJ (more flights, easier scheduling) and then transfer to a hotel in the capital. The PUJ-to-Santo-Domingo transfer is also a common route for cruise passengers connecting to Sans Souci and for travelers with a return flight from SDQ.
Travel time and distance: PUJ to Santo Domingo
Distance from PUJ to central Santo Domingo: approximately 200 km. Travel time in a private vehicle: 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes via the Autopista del Coral (DR-3 toll highway) and Autopista Las Américas. Final 20-30 minutes depend on traffic in the city, especially during Santo Domingo rush hours (7-9 AM and 5-7 PM).
The route is straightforward: DR-3 west toward La Romana, continue on Autopista del Coral past Boca Chica, then onto Las Américas highway and into the city. Tolls total RD$760+ each way (included in your fare). Rest stops with bathrooms, coffee and snacks are available at Bayahibe junction (~45 min) and Boca Chica (~1h45).
Why choose a private transfer to Santo Domingo
Public buses (Expreso Bávaro, Caribe Tours) exist and cost less than $20 USD, but they take 4-5 hours, require a transfer in Santo Domingo and don't drop you at your hotel. After a long international flight, the savings rarely justify the loss of half a day. Street taxis won't take the trip; rental cars require Dominican GPS knowledge.
A private Next Ride transfer is door-to-door: flat $190 SUV / $250 van / $360 Sprinter VIP confirmed in writing, single bilingual driver, modern A/C vehicle, tolls and fuel included, bottled water on board. The same flat rate covers any Santo Domingo address — Zona Colonial boutique hotels, Piantini business hotels, residential pickups, SDQ airport-to-airport or the Sans Souci cruise terminal.
For business travelers and honeymoon couples, the Mercedes Sprinter VIP option adds leather captain seats, USB charging, ambient lighting and optional Wi-Fi — much more comfortable for 2 hours on the road than any taxi or bus.
Arrival tips at PUJ for the Santo Domingo route
Standard PUJ flow applies: immigration, baggage, customs, exit through the arrivals doors. Your Next Ride driver waits with a printed sign with your name. WhatsApp shared 24 hours in advance.
Because the drive is 2+ hours, plan for one bathroom and coffee break — most guests prefer the Boca Chica service area about 90 minutes in, where there's a clean Total / Esso station with a Pricesmart-style food court. Your driver will stop on request at no extra cost.
For Santo Domingo cruise passengers: give us your sailing time and the cruise line on booking so we can drop at the right terminal entrance (Sans Souci has two embarkation lanes). For SDQ-bound passengers connecting to onward international flights, we recommend leaving Punta Cana 5 hours before your scheduled departure to absorb any traffic on Las Américas.
