About Miches — the Dominican Republic's new luxury frontier
Miches sits on the north-eastern coast of the Dominican Republic, on the shore of Samaná Bay, and has quickly become the country's most talked-about emerging luxury destination. Where Punta Cana was 20 years ago, Miches is today: dozens of kilometers of untouched palm-lined beaches, coconut plantations reaching the shore, mangrove estuaries and the dramatic backdrop of the Cordillera Oriental mountains — all still without a mass-tourism footprint.
The area is anchored by Playa Esmeralda, a 30-km stretch of pristine sand that hosts Zoëtry Agua Punta Cana (Hyatt Inclusive), Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda and the recently opened Viva Miches by Wyndham. A private airport transfer from PUJ is currently the only comfortable way to reach Miches — there is no public transport, no scheduled shuttle service and no Uber.

Distance from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) to Miches / Playa Esmeralda: approximately 75 km. Travel time in a private vehicle: 60 to 75 minutes depending on the exact resort and traffic through Uvero Alto. The route follows the Coral Highway north past Uvero Alto and then turns inland through Sabana de la Mar country roads before descending to the bay.
Road conditions have improved dramatically since 2023 — the new Miches access road is fully paved with proper signage, and the drive is safe day and night.
