About La Romana — Casa de Campo, the cruise port and LRM
La Romana is a province and city on the south coast of the Dominican Republic, about 100 km west of Punta Cana. It is best known internationally for three things: Casa de Campo Resort & Villas (a 7,000-acre luxury complex with three championship golf courses, the Marina, the Teeth of the Dog course and the Altos de Chavón cultural village), the La Romana cruise port (Sans Souci / Port La Romana, used by Costa, MSC, Aida and Carnival), and La Romana International Airport (LRM), which receives charter flights from Italy, France and Canada.
Many travelers fly into Punta Cana (PUJ) and then transfer to La Romana — for Casa de Campo stays, for a cruise embarkation, for a charter connection at LRM, or simply to combine a Caribbean beach week with an Altos de Chavón cultural day. PUJ has more international flights and easier connections than LRM, so the PUJ-to-La Romana transfer is one of our most-booked intercity routes.
Travel time and distance: PUJ to La Romana
Distance from PUJ to central La Romana: approximately 100 km. Travel time in a private vehicle: 60 to 75 minutes via Highway DR-3 (the modern Autopista del Coral / Coral Highway). For Casa de Campo specifically, add 5-10 minutes for the internal road from the La Romana exit to your villa or hotel lobby.
DR-3 is a 4-lane toll highway in excellent condition, well-lit, with rest stops every 30-40 km and tourist police patrols. Tolls are included in your Next Ride transfer fare. The highway continues all the way to Santo Domingo, so this is the same route used for cruise port runs, LRM transfers and Santo Domingo intercity trips.
Why choose a private transfer to La Romana
Public buses (Caribe Tours, APTPRA) require a connection in Bávaro or San Pedro and burn 3-4 hours each way. Shared shuttles rarely service La Romana directly because the distance breaks their economics. Street taxis at PUJ will quote $150-220 USD with no fixed rate and almost never accept credit cards for a long-distance ride.
A private Next Ride transfer is the only sensible option: flat $110 SUV / $145 van confirmed in writing before you fly, single bilingual driver, modern A/C vehicle, tolls included. The same flat rate covers Casa de Campo villas, Altos de Chavón, the cruise terminal, LRM airport, Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus, Dreams La Romana, Viva Wyndham Dominicus and any La Romana hotel or address.
For cruise passengers specifically, we time pickups to drop you at the terminal 2-3 hours before sail, with luggage cart assistance at the entrance — a much smoother experience than a same-day taxi scramble.
Arrival tips at PUJ for the La Romana route
Standard PUJ flow: immigration, baggage, customs, exit through the arrivals doors. Your Next Ride driver waits with a printed sign showing your name. WhatsApp shared 24 hours before flight.
Bring layers — DR-3 is faster than the Bávaro / Uvero Alto roads, and the vehicle A/C tends to feel cool after a long Caribbean flight. We carry blankets on request for early-morning or late-night transfers.
If you're connecting to a Costa, MSC or Aida cruise at the La Romana port, give us your sailing time on booking so we can build the pickup time backwards from that. We coordinate with all major cruise lines and know the Sans Souci embarkation procedures.
If you're flying out of LRM (for example, on a Neos charter back to Italy), the airport-to-airport flat rate applies — same vehicle, same price as a hotel transfer.
