How to pick the best Saona Island excursion from Punta Cana, what to bring, real 2026 prices and tips local guides won't tell you.
Saona Island is the postcard of the Dominican Republic: white sand, leaning palm trees, and a turquoise sea that looks Photoshopped. Done right, it is the best day of your Punta Cana trip. Done wrong, it is a long bus ride with 200 strangers and a mediocre buffet. This guide is everything Next Ride drivers tell their own friends.
Where does the Saona Island tour start?
All Saona tours depart from Bayahibe marina, about 1h45 from Bávaro by road and 30 minutes from La Romana. Hotel pickup in Bávaro and Punta Cana is usually 6:30-7:00 AM. Tours from Uvero Alto leave even earlier. Boats leave Bayahibe between 8:30 and 9:00 AM.
Catamaran + speedboat is the right combo
There are three boat formats: catamaran only (slowest), speedboat only (fastest but misses the music), and the classic catamaran + speedboat combo. We recommend the combo: catamaran outbound (slow, music, open bar, sunbathing on the net) and speedboat return (fast, scenic). Avoid bus-and-boat-only versions — they skip the natural pool.
The natural pool (the real highlight)
Halfway to Saona, the boat stops at a shallow sandbank in the middle of the sea where you stand in waist-deep crystal water surrounded by starfish. This stop is what makes the tour worth it. Bring an underwater camera or GoPro.
What to bring
Reef-safe sunscreen (regular sunscreen is banned in the national park), swimsuit under your clothes, hat or cap, towel, small cash in USD or DOP for souvenirs and tips, and dry bag for your phone. Snorkel gear is included but bring your own mask if you have one. Skip flip-flops on the catamaran — barefoot is easier.
When to go
December-April for the calmest sea and best visibility. Avoid days with multiple cruise ships docking in La Romana — Saona gets crowded on those days. Mondays and Fridays are usually quieter. The wet season (June-October) still works but pack a light rain jacket.
Real prices 2026
Group tour with hotel pickup: from 79 USD per adult, 45 USD per child. Premium small-group tour: from 109 USD. Private Saona Island tour (whole boat for your group): from 1,200 USD (up to 12 pax). All include catamaran + speedboat, open bar, buffet on the beach and pickup. See our Saona Island tour page for live availability.
Should you skip the group transfer and book a private one?
Group Saona tours include a shuttle from your hotel, but you'll sit on a bus for 90+ minutes each way with multiple pickups. Many couples and families book a private Next Ride transfer to Bayahibe instead (more comfortable, faster, you set the time). Ask us for the combined Saona + private transfer rate when you book.
Common mistakes to avoid
1) Booking the cheapest version on the street — it usually skips the natural pool. 2) Forgetting reef-safe sunscreen — they confiscate the regular one. 3) Drinking too much rum on the outbound catamaran — you'll feel it during the speedboat return. 4) Skipping breakfast at the hotel — the buffet on the beach is at 1 PM and you'll be hungry.
